Commenced April 2011 Gyrocopter (Gyroplane) MT-03 training with GS Aviation

Gyrocopter (Gyroplane) MT-03 training

We commenced gyrocopter training on 4th April 2011 with our first ab initio student going solo on 6 July. You can learn to fly in a gyrocopter (gyroplane) with GS Aviation, a Wiltshire flying school offering gyrotraining to PPL(G) using MT-03 aircraft. Ground school, trial lessons and gift vouchers are also available.

Fantastic visibility - cuts through turbulence - 40kts wind tolerance - Great Fun

The MT-03 is one of the new generation of aircraft in the UK, BCAR Section-T compliant, factory built in Germany and final assembly in the UK at Rotorsport UK Ltd's CAA approved workshops. Gyrocopters have come a long way since Little Nellie in the James Bond film You Only Live Twice and are now practical, safe and serious fun to fly machines.

The gyroplane complements our other flying activities. In many ways the aircraft is very similar to our present microlights. Same Rotax engine, same maximum take off weight, similar range and performance with the only major difference that it can land in a much smaller space. The licence required is the PPL(G) which requires more hours than the microlight but then the aircrafts abilities are much broader.

If you have ever fancied flying a rotary wing aircraft then consider the gyrocopter rather than a helicopter. They may not be able to take off vertically and hover but otherwise have many similarities. However the gyroplane uses considerably less fuel, is quieter and much much cheaper to fly.

We started training in April 2011, initially at Rufforth in Yorkshire whilst our CFI, Graham, gets the neccessary experience to upgrade to full gyro instructor rating. As at the end of September 2011 Graham had got his first pupil that had started as ab-initio through to his GST. As at 17th January 2012 Graham completed the 100 hours instruction as an Assistant Flying Instructor to allow him to apply for the test to upgrade to full Flying Instructor (FI). This means that he now only a few weeks away from being able to operate fully from Clench. • Aircraft is a MT-03 training aircraft.
  • Starts Monday through to Friday or by arrangement
  • One to one basis with your instructor.
  • 10 hours of flying, with the option of more hours if required at a pro-rata rate.
  • Cost of the course includes a maximum of 10 hours flying including instructor briefings (except for long briefings), with more flying available at pro rata dual rates if time allows.
  • If a day is lost due to inclement weather then ground school and written papers on Aircraft Technical, AirLaw, Meteorology, Navigation and Human Performance and Limitations can be substituted, so that every day of the 5 days is filled with additions towards the PPL G licence.
  • The written examination can be taken on each subject when the student is deemed to be ready, these all contribute towards the PPL G licence.

This 5 day course is designed to consolidate both the practical flying and the knowledge required to help achieve the goal of a PPL G Licence. You will be taught on a small, quiet airfield surrounded by beautiful countryside. According to CAA SRG FORM 2101 the required minimum hours for the PPL G is 40h. With a dispensation of 10 hours for qualified aeroplane or microlight pilots and a dispensation of 20 hours for qualified helicopter licences.

Rotorcraft Flying Handbook Rotorcraft Flying Handbook

To be re-published April 2012
208 pages paperback
Guide Price: £11.69, or Kindle £4.97
At first sight this looks like a helicopter manual however chapters 15 to 20 are on gyrocopters and it provides a lot of the technical detail about how rotary wing aircraft fly. I found this a useful read along side Phil Harwoods book mentioned above. Click here to buy the previous edition through our Amazon shop
